Tiger Woods’ close friend, and my buddy, Mark O’Meara had some interesting quotes about Tiger today.
O’Meara on Tiger’s return:
He hasn’t told me personally when he’s going to start back, but I know he’s pretty much almost ready to start back, so I wouldn’t be surprised. But I don’t make his schedule, and I know that everybody always wants me to tell everybody when he’s going to play, but I don’t know what he’s going to play.
I think he’s going to be come back better than ever. That’s just my opinion, and I can be wrong. But most of the time with Tiger, I’ve been right.
Tiger’s 2nd child Charlie’s birth was hurdle #1, and full recovery from his knee surgery were the two hurdles for Tiger. Based on the fact that those have both happened, Mark O’Meara’s comments, and the fact that Tiger’s newsletter stated he was playing at full bore say he’s close.
A look at the schedule for good tournament candidates
Looking ahead, next week’s Accenture Match Play is a good candidate for Tiger’s return. Accenture sponsors Tiger. Plus, being match play means Tiger may not have to play as many holes if he closes players out early (or they close him out). On 2nd thought though, the 36 hole final match would be tough.
Whether Tiger returns next week or not I definitely don’t see him playing at the Honda Classic in the first week of March. Not terribly likely he plays the week after in Puerto Rico either. So those two tournaments could be a chance to rest and evaluate the knee IF he plays the Accenture.
Doral on March 12 is a strong candidate for Tiger to play, and the Arnold Palmer Inivitational March 26th is a very high probability in my estimation.
Then Tiger would rest before the Masters Tournament on April 9th.
My sincere congratulations to Tiger Woods! His son, Charlie Axel Woods was born yesterday, February 8, 2009. According to his web site, Elin and Charlie are doing great.
This is one of the hurdles Tiger has been waiting for prior to his return to the PGA Tour. I figure this will help speed up Tiger’s return.
Exclusive photo of Tiger Woods baby Charlie Woods
The crack Hooked On Golf Blog media team has acquired a photo of Charlie Woods. You saw it here first folks! Similar to the photo of Sam Alexis, Charie Woods also has a very unique birth mark as you can see below:
On my annual flight to and from the PGA Show I read my one golf book for the year. Last year I read Greg Norman’s book, then bumped into Greg the next day. This year I read Bob Smiley’s book “Follow The Roar,” a book about Tiger Woods’ 2008 season. How could I resist reading this one? Harper Collins sent me TWO copies.
So maybe I’d run into Bob or Tiger at the PGA Show? Unfortunately not.
Follow The Roar Premise
Bob Smiley had a wild idea for the 2008 PGA Tour season: Follow Tiger Woods for every hole he plays. The fact that he pulled it off, minus a couple of holes at Iselworth, is incredible. The only reason he couldn’t make those holes in time, was because he was racing Tiger’s private jet in a Toyota. The jet won.
Smiley style
Anyone who frequents my blog has an idea about my writing style. I try to write as if I was just talking to the readers while having a frosty beverage with them at the 19th hole. I keep it casual and I’m definitely not trying to be the next Ernest Hemmingway.
Bob Smiley’s style is similar to what I hope mine is, very personable and easy to read. I didn’t have to get out my dictionary once, unlike some books I’ve read which seem to be only an attempt at impressing the reader with the author’s grammatical prowess.
Tiger’s most spectacular season?
In the book Smiley claims to have followed Tiger around for his most spectacular season. I thought Tiger’s 2000 season was his best. How could 2008 beat Tiger’s 2000? How could a year which Tiger only played two majors be his most incredible? He ended his year after the gutty win at the U.S. Open and the playoff with Rocco Mediate. Remember how he beat the field, and Rocco, with two fractures in his leg and a torn ACL? After reading Smiley’s book, I can’t argue that 2008 wasn’t, as short as it was, Tiger’s best. One thing is sure, it was at least his best “per-event” performance.
Insights on Tiger and Bob
Bob Smiley never met Tiger. When he started out on this journey Smiley wasn’t a Tiger fan. Smiley noted that Tiger wasn’t overly nice or receptive to the fans like other players such as Phil Mickleson. By the end of the book Smiley had turned into a Tiger Woods fan, and had some very insightful theories as to why Tiger is the way he is and what makes him tick. That insight, which I won’t tell you, proved to be very interesting and I believe it.
The book isn’t just a play by play of Tiger’s 2008 season. Smiley’s book also tells you a lot about himself, his determination and how he sees and interacts with the world. That personal viewpoint gives this book a fresh flow and perspective. You can tell that Bob would be a fun guy to have a beer with.
Has anyone else wondered why Rory Sabbatini is no longer with Nike and is now with Adams Golf? Why would a golf company not want the 11th ranked player in the world on their endorsement list? Hasn’t anyone thought that just maybe Tiger had something to do with this? Hear me out.
2007 Masters: Rory is giving Tiger all sorts of smack talk and grief. 2007 Target World Challenge: Sabbatini becomes the first ever player to withdraw but still collects $170K, kicking Tiger and the sponsors in the golf balls.
Fast forward a month and Sabbatini is no longer a Nike guy. You don’t suppose it’s possible that (behind closed doors and off the record) Tiger pulled a string or two and had Sabbatini’s Nike deal axed? Or perhaps without Tiger even asking, Nike just did it on their own? Coincidence? What’s the real story?
Browsing through my photo gallery I realized it’s been a while since I updated the ever famous photos of Tiger Woods’ home. The Tiger Woods’ house photos that floated around the emails for a while are in there but they were just shots of some great pad in Maui, not Tiger’s. These photos were so popular I put them in their own gallery here.
I finally updated the gallery and put some pictures of Tiger Woods house in Windermere, Florida (top right). I also found a few of Tiger’s new house in Juniper Island (below).
For good measure there’s also a of Tiger Woods’ house in the Bahamas (below).
