Man do I have a lot of portable USB/Lightning devices: Two iPads, a 7-inch Android Tablet, a 10 inch Galaxy Tablet, iPhone, Samsung Phone. That’s not to mention all of the portable golf devices I have which charge via USB: Portable golf GPS units, GPS Watches, GameGolf, Arccos, Mobitee PIQ, TLink GPS. Woa wait a minute. I have even more devices that charge off of USB. I have two portable Sony cameras which rely on micro USB charging.
When I’m out and about or traveling, invariably one of my zillions of devices’ battery dies. That’s where my new myCharge HubMax Portable Charger comes into play. HubMax is a great USB/Lightning charger. Let me tell you this, myCharge is in charge!
HubMax Features
HubMax is a portable charging device which has a Lightning cable for Apple devices like iPhones, Apple Watches, and iPads. It also has a built in micro-USB for standard devices like smartphones, fitness devices, tablets and so on. And in case those two cables don’t cover it, there’s a standard USB port on the side. This is perfect for some of my golf GPS watches which have a standard USB plug on one end and a bizarre proprietary charging setup on the unit.
The HubMax is one of a series of four Hub units. The HubMax is the 2nd to the top of the list in terms of the amount of power it holds, at 10,050mAh. The biggest unit, the HubUltra has a capacity of 12,000mAh while the smallest unit, the HubMini, clocks in at 3,000mAh.
The Max provides me about 6x the battery life of my phone. When I’m out on the HOG World Tour I can use a lot of battery power between GPSing golf holes, shooting pictures, and sharing photos and content from the course with my phone. Now I need not worry about having enough battery life.
The unit’s Lithium ion battery and technology allows it to charge very fast, up to 50% faster than comparable units. It also charges devices up to 65% faster. Great to plug it in during lunch, between two rounds of 18.
The footprint is about 2x as thick as a smartphone, but not as tall or wide.
The unit plugs into the wall (photo below). The charging prongs conveniently fold in for transport.
Conclusion
The myCharge Hub series runs in price from $49 for the Mini to $149 for the Ultra. My unit, the HubMax, runs $99. On and off the course this is a fantastic accessory for the golfer or the golf spectator. A portable charger like this would make a great gift for the golfer who has lots of electronic golf gadgets.
I’ve played different versions of “Vegas Golf,” the game where you have casino chips representing different good and bad situations that happen on the golf course. Recently I put the Vegas Golf VIP version into play with my group. $42 later I think it worked out quite well. Let’s take a look.
Vegas Golf VIP Edition
This is a golf game played between 2-4 golfers. It wouldn’t be possible to play more than four due to the players being in different groups. The game comes with 19 casino-style chips. Each chip represents an event that can occur on the course, like making a birdie or 3-putting. Some events are positive, like the eagle, birdie, 3-pars-in-a-row chips. Some events are not good, like the water hazard, 3-putt, anger, lost ball chips.
During play the “chip keeper” will hand out chips to players as the events occur. In my round yesterday for instance, I hit a tree on the first tee shot. Yes, I captured the tree chip. If another golfer hit a tree after that, he/she would get the chip. There are certain chips that are very active, like the 1-putt chip.
The group decides on a bet value per chip. In the case of my group, we decided on $1.00 per chip. So if a player ended up with say the birdie chip at the end of 18 holes, he would collect $1.00 from each of the other players in the group. If a player ended up with one of the bad chips, like the 3-putt chip, he would pay each of the other players in the group $1.00.
During the round it is quite fun to razz your opponents and hand them the tree chip or the lost ball chip. It’s great to get rid of that one. It’s also great to capture the birdie chip, and hope to be able to keep it for the whole round.
Accessory Bag
This version of the game comes with a nice accessory bag to store the chips in. It clasps onto the golf bag for easy use and access.
Conclusion
Vegas Golf VIP is quite fun. My group had a blast playing it, except for the guy who ended up with the tree chip, worm burner chip, and water hazard chip. I don’t think he was too thrilled. But I digress.
This $50 valued golf game is $29 on Amazon and is a very fun and reasonably priced golf gift for the holidays, Christmas, Father’s Day, birthdays.
Man it is November already. This year has flown by. I already saw a Christmas tree erected downtown here near a shopping mall. With the holiday season approaching I will be posting my annual golf gift guides. Call them Christmas golf gift guides or holiday golf gift guides. Whatever your politically correct leanings are.
If you have a product you would like to see featured in said gift guides please read on. Because I cover so many product submissions and spend so much time reviewing products, my gift guides feature only products I’ve reviewed in the past year. That way the reader can see the full review and I can help regenerate some traffic to those reviews. If I’ve already reviewed your product this year, there’s not much else to do other than send me a note. If you want to have a product featured which I have not reviewed or received, theres still time, but not much.
Some of the categories I cover include golf equipment, golf apparel, golf accessories.
You can visit the product review submissions page and guidelines for info on submitting a product.
Cheers.
Christmas is coming up soon and what better way to spread the holiday cheer than with a fine Honduran cigar? How about this one, the Romeo Y Julieta House of Capulet Toro?
This cigar is a very tasty cigar for my not-so-professional cigar taste, not too strong. Medium strength is good for me. The flavor stays consistent, even toward the end of the cigar’s life where some can get a bit nasty. This size will last me several holes to perhaps 1/3 of a round on the golf course, or about 40-60 minutes on the front porch. Even the lovely bride, who is a newb to cigars, enjoys this one despite the strength being a little bit higher than she would prefer.
The numbers for me don’t lie. My golf scores when enjoying a fine cigar are a good 40% better. I’m not kidding. Perhaps it is that the cigar helps me relax, or perhaps keeps my mind eating itself with bad memories of the last 3-putt. Out of courtesy I always give my opponents an opportunity to surrender as I light up my next cigar.
This the 2nd installment of my 2015 golf Christmas gift guides. These guides may be known to the politically correct as “holiday” golf gift guides.
Today’s gift category is golf accessories. Below are a few suggestions. Click the title link or the image to go to the full product review.
GPS watches are very popular in golf at this time. Your yardage to the front, middle, and back of the great is on your wrist at all times. Keep score too.
This awesome LARGE flask is a must for the golf bag and for other opportune times like tailgating. Have a wee nip!
If you like having the top of the line when it comes to your golf accessories, this is your laser. Not the cheapest, but the best in performance and quality no doubt.
Whether on the practice range, in the garage, or on the beach this is a great bluetooth speaker. I recommend metal.
This is a very nice switchblade divot tool. Super high quality and includes a magnetic ball marker.
I certainly can’t blame my golf accessories if I miss a green or a target! When I’ve got the Bushnell NEO Ghost pocket golf GPS on my person I have solid yardages of about 30,000 courses!
My family enjoys some of these “gift of the month” types of gigs, wine, fruit, cakes… Birdie Box offers several golf related subscriptions, all which could be some great holiday/Christmas gifts that “keep on giving.”
Rukket Sports makes some very cool practice nets for all sorts of sports, not just golf. I have several now. This is a good one for short game practice, and boy do I need that.
