What the heck is this?
There’s probably nobody on the planet who has more golf gadgets in his/her house than me. 10+ years of running a popular golf blog will do that. Most of the gadgets are useless pieces of plastic and metal that some poor aspiring golf entrepreneur blew his retirement fund on in hopes of selling a million of them. Likely the poor sap as 5,000 of them sitting in his garage, shipped directly to him from a plant in China that screwed them up and took his money.
I thought the SILO Golf Club Carrier by Rival and Revel would be another one of those useless gadgets I trip over in the middle of the night on the way to the bathroom, but after playing with it I’ve changed my opinion.
So what is the SILO? It’s a golf club carrier which carries up to six clubs, three tees, and a ball marker. The intended use is for times when carrying a full bag of clubs isn’t needed and just a few are necessary. Those times might be practice sessions, rounds on smaller courses, or perhaps using it to carry wedges and a putter right of one’s main bag.
I’ve played in a lot of 3 and 4-club tournaments, and the scores are nearly the same for the players as when they play their usual 14 clubs. So why not knock it down to six clubs and carry 80% less weight around?
Scotland Coming
I’m currently planning my third trip to Scotland. Golf over there is very different than here in the USA. I’ve learned what clubs I use over there and what ones I don’t. Most of my wedges are useless over there, especially a lob wedge. I could easily go with a sand wedge and get rid of the gap, lob, and maybe even pitching wedge. The only reason I would keep the sand is to get out of pot bunkers. I never used 3-wood either. I could easily drop 2-3 irons. The ball rolls forever there, and it’s about feel. I’ve thought of bringing a pencil bag with about 8-10 clubs, but now I’m toying with the thought of bringing the SILO and six clubs: Driver, putter, sand wedge, 5-iron, 7-iron, pitching wedge… or perhaps driver, putter, SW, 4-iron, 6-iron, 8-iron.
Critiques
There are three tee holes on the opposite end of the unit from the magnetic ball marker. I could not get a tee in there.
Suggestions
I would love to see a SILO-8 or SILO-10. The 8 or 10 representing the number of clubs it holds. I would like to see a wider unit and down the center one could store a sleeve of balls (not in the sleeve of course).
Conclusion
Would a tour pro use this golf gadget? Probably not. But for practice, quick nines, or perhaps a trip to Scotland the SILO could be a great alternative to a golf bag Joe golfer.
Pop quiz: What college football team is currently ranked #5 in the AP poll and is still undefeated?
Answer: My University of Utah Utes.
Such a great color…
In the festive spirit of college football and college sports in general, Kentwool is now making a new rainbow of colors for their Tour Profile golf socks called the Gameday Collection. The Gameday Collection features color schemes from most colleges out there, including my Utah Utes. Kentwools are the ONLY socks I wear. Period. That’s it. These wool socks are unbelievable and by far the best socks I’ve ever worn, bar none.
For info on the new product line see the HogWire press release from Kentwool.
And below are some links to other Kentwool reviews I’ve done.

Though I’m not currently on the course (I do have to write these posts from somewhere other than the 2nd green) I’m still enjoying today’s shirt script, the Antigua Desert Dry Performance Cotton Golf Polo. This is a great shirt for the current weather conditions here, 90+ degrees. Let’s take a close look at this golf polo.
Materials
I’m a polyester and spandex fan typically. I’m not talking about 1980’s hair band spandex, just to clarify. So I’m not as hip on cotton apparel lately. The Antigua Desert Dry Performance Cotton Golf Polo (yes it is a mouthful) has changed my tune though, from an 80’s hair band song to something much better. The fabric in this polo combines Antigua’s “Desert Dry moisture management technology” along with natural fibers of cotton.
Sounds good but what does that mean? The fabric sucks moisture (sweat) away from the body. It goes through the fabric to the outside where it can evaporate. In even more simple terms, it helps keep the player dry. More on this:
“Cotton as a fiber alone absorbs moisture quickly, but doesn’t allow the moisture to travel across the cotton knitted fibers for quicker release — like synthetic micro-filament fibers. By engineering fabrics utilizing synthetic micro-filament yarns and blending them with fine natural cotton fibers, D2PC offers the look and casual comfort of cotton while maximizing the wicking properties of a performance fabric.” ~Antigua
Style/Fit
This polo is extremely simple in style, yet super good looking. It’s not flashy but it’s classy.
The fit is super comfortable and does not interfere with my mouse clicking in the office or my full golf swing on the course. Those are my two most crucial skills and I need performance out of them!
On The Course
Speaking of the course, I’ve enjoyed many rounds in my DDPC polo. Despite high temperatures and humidity lately, I’ve been quite comfortable. The shirt is very light, soft, and does not pull or bind in my golf swing.
Conclusion
It’s late in the game but still a few days before Father’s Day. Your local golf course shop or major sports/golf retailer may have the Desert Dry Performance Cotton polos in stock. They’re inexpensive, comfortable, stylish, and perform well on and off the course.
Regular followers of this humble golf blog know that I’m a big supporter of the fantastic golf apparel brand Dunning Golf. Dunning is a higher-end apparel label for men only which is producing some of the absolute best golf shirts, outerwear, pants/shorts, and even underwear. Today’s review is the Dunning Stretch Performance Bottoms (golf shorts).
Materials
These shorts are made from 90% polyester and 10% spandex. These are the two best modern materials for golf apparel in my opinion, not cotton. Because of these materials, the shorts are very flexible and comfortable. The shorts don’t wrinkle easily. They are low maintenance, easy to wash, and don’t shrink.
Style
There’s not an apparel label out there which nails golf style as well as Dunning Golf. These shorts are so sharp, clean looking, and classy. Plus Dunning’s colors seem to match so well with a myriad of shirt colors and styles.
On The Course
There’s nothing worse than tight or uncomfortable apparel impeding or restricting the golf swing. None of that with the Stretch Performance Bottoms. Swing away freely and play as good as you are capable, in full comfort and style.
In the office or out on the town there are no better shorts. Really. No better shorts.
Conclusion
I first found out about Dunning when in Colombia playing in the Web.com Tour Colombia Open pro-am. I was paired with Kevin Foley and I remember being very impressed with the style and look of his Dunning pants. That was the first exposure I had to the brand and honestly I’ve never had that type of reaction to pants before. I’m thrilled to have some Dunning shorts in my massive wardrobe a couple of years later.
The Dunning Stretch Performance shorts shine in all the areas I need them to: comfort, style, performance, maintenance.

Hats off to the president and vice president of my local men’s golf association at River Oaks in Sandy, Utah. The club has been including very nice gifts for their members as a thank you for signing up for the yearly league. Last year it was a personalized water bottle. When I was president of the league for seven (long) years, I didn’t think of that, though we did give the members a prime rib dinner at the end of the season.
This year’s gift is ironically a product I received for review a few weeks ago and which I was about to post about, PitchFix. PitchFix is a switchblade divot tool of very high quality design, style, and workmanship.
The tool comes in a nice branded tin along with two extra ball markers. Very classy.
I also like the fact that the whole men’s association has divot repair tools now. I hope they use them!
This would make a very nice and classy Father’s Day gift. If you want to buy one now, follow this link to several PitchFix models on Amazon.
