Cleveland Golf’s new Smart Square putter hits the shelves today. I’ve had the pleasure of putting the new Cleveland Golf Smart Square putter into play for a few weeks now. Ah, the benefits of running a popular golf website. Wondering why I didn’t start a bikini website or perhaps lingerie? But that’s a subject for another day…
Let’s take a close look at the lingerie Smart Square putter.
Smart Square Features
The SSP features a “dual axis alignment.” Two parallel lines extend from the center of the face helping with alignment and stroke path. Opposing perpendicular lines give the player feedback as to face angle.
The face of the putter has a copolymer insert which puts a true roll on the ball and gives the player excellent feedback in both feel and sound. That feel and feedback helps with distance control.
The putter’s high MOI (moment of inertia) helps to make off-center strikes roll straight and with the proper distance.
Traditional lengths are available in 33, 34 and 35 inch versions. Shafting options include heel and center-shaft. Lie is 70 degrees and loft is 3 degrees. Retail price on the traditional style model is $139.00.
There is an “Almost Belly” version which is 39 inches in length and features a heavier 400 gram head. The same lie and loft of 70/3 applies. Retail price on the Almost Belly model is $179.00.
On The Course
Putting is the strength of my game. With a good putter of any make or model I feel I’m capable of putting with Tour-like skill. Lets not talk about the rest my game though!
I enjoy putting with the Smart Square. It is weighted extremely well and seems to “want” to travel on line and stay square to the target. This is very good, especially when the concentration level is wandering.
I set up with a lot of square angles and straight lines. My feet are parallel to the target line, squared to the target line. The visual aspects of the putter help me with that setup. I’m not a big mallet guy but this one works well and sets up great for my eye. The lines not only help the setup, but help subconsciously help the player keep the face square and the putts on line.
The feel and distance control of this putter is fantastic. I’m able to produce perfect pace, not running into come-back-ers of unmanageable lengths.
Conclusion
It’s hip to be square.
The two-square concept isn’t just a gimmick. The squares are definite visual aids which help in the setup and during the stroke. To complement the benefits of the squares, the balance and feel of the Smart Square is excellent.
If you’re in the market for a new putter, give the Cleveland Smart Square a look.

I can see the benefits of this putter already. I tend to setup my putting with very square lines. Feet are parallel, eyes, shoulders, hips, toes. All square.
Plus, for those who seem to have a hard time hitting their putts “square” this may be the ticket!
I’ll start my review process asap. Not much season left here. Stay tuned for my review of the Cleveland Golf Smart Square Putter coming soon…
