I’ve been known to partake on the golf course when it comes to cigars. In fact, HOG has done a lot of cigar and cigar accessory reviews for golfers. It’s tough work, reviewing fine cigars while golfing. I’m willing to take on the task.
I’m happy to feature a very fine magnetic cigar holder, perfect for golf carts or anywhere a magnet can find a friendly flat steel surface. Check out the aluminum, milled cigar holder by Ricky Johnson Putters.
In the photo above I have the cigar holder attached to the support beam of my golf cart roof. I’ve stuck the unit elsewhere as well, like on the front porch steel side table. It works great. The magnet is extremely strong and withstands high wind, bumps and all sorts of other abuse.
When not in use this nice ($70 nice!) milled aluminum cigar holder lives in its carrying bag with drawstring (below). I keep my holder ready to go in my golf bag at all times. Best be prepared.
Room For Improvement?
I’d love to see a Hooked on Golf Blog logo milled into one of these beauties. Custom logo would be a great offering.
Final Thoughts
The milled aluminum cigar holder from Ricky Johnson Putters is super classy, solid, attractive, useful, and convenient. Snag one and class up your golf cigar accessories. Snag one for the cigar aficionado in your friends list too.
Sigh. This has been a very tough review. It has taken a lot of work on the course and in a few select locations to get the testing environment setup and working well. I have overcome. The tests are complete, but I will continue followup tests of course. Let’s look at the Stage V Clinger cigar holder.
Stage V Clinger Cigar Holder, in action!
First, I dig this shade of red. It’s a college sports thing. I gave the blue unit away. Solid.
The holder has several sizes in the opening to accommodate different sizes of smokes. It can also be bent a tiny bit to adjust more. I had to do this because my humidor was working too well, and some of my cigars have been a little too soft.
The holder comes with a velcro strap to mount it onto just about anything. But the best mount feature is the two strong Neodymium magnets. Neodymium magnets are extremely powerful. From my old rock & roll and recording days I have microphones with those magnets in them… Anyway, as you can see in the photo above, any metal surface can be turned into a convenient cigar holder.
When not in use, the very light and small Stage V Clinger stows away in my golf bag. Super convenient.

Conclusion
The Stage V Clinger cigar holder is solid and works great. Definitely made it to the gamer bag.
This winter has been tough on the golf game. Most snow we’ve had in years here in northern Utah. The skiing has been great, but the golf has been… nonexistent. Spring is coming. And when it does I’ll be getting to the big list of golf equipment, apparel and accessories I have to review. One I’ll get to right off the bat is the Stage V Clinger, a magnetic cigar holder which also comes with a velcro strap in the event a metal surface isn’t available. Look, I even found metal in my wall.

Today’s review is of a very unique golf and lifestyle product that not many golfers will get an opportunity to try, Pete Dye cigars. But since HOG is all about delivering unique and useful content which isn’t found elsewhere, I bring you this incredible bit of golf blogging.
Pete Dye
First off, one must know who Pete Dye is before going much farther into this review. For those who don’t know, Pete Dye is one of golf’s all-time greatest golf course architects. Dye is known for his “Dye-abolical” designs around the world. Some of his most notable courses include TPC Sawgrass which is home of THE PLAYERS Championship. Always write “THE PLAYERS” in ALL CAPS! It’s what they do. Other courses Dye is famous for include PGA West, Trump National LA, Harbour Town, Kiawah Island, Whistling Straits, Casa de Campo, Southern Hills.
Recently I played and reviewed a newer Dye course in Indiana at the French Lick Resort, named the “Dye Course.” I must say that was probably the toughest course I’ve ever played, and by a large margin. The picture above right is of me and Mr. Dye at French Lick.
At the conclusion of the $350 round, the Dye Course at French Lick rewards the golfer for surviving by giving him and his group a goodie box with whisky and Pete Dye cigars inside. Thus, this Pete Dye cigar review.
Pete Dye Cigars
First one might think that a course giving out cigars is going to be giving out crap quality smokes. Honestly, I expected that too. But one must realize that Dye has a lot of courses, and even a house in the Dominican Republic. Depending on who you talk to, some say Dominican cigars rival Cuban cigars. I love them both. So these cigars are no cheapos. No way. They’re actually VERY good.
Pete Dye Cigars
This cigar is smooth and enjoyable. I’d call it a medium strength smoke. Through the life of the cigar, down to roach-clip-range, it was consistently flavorful. It didn’t get nasty at the end like come cigars do.
During one recent round I handed out these cigars to my pals. My golfing buddies who were with me that day enjoyed them very much. And as I usually do, I played my best golf with the cigar in action. I was EVEN PAR on the day. Thanks Pete. I can call you Pete, right?
Conclusion
I haven’t researched to find out if one can buy the Pete Dye cigars, or if so where they are available. The only place I know to get them is by playing golf at French Lick’s Dye Course. As good as these cigars are it just might be worth the $350/round cost to get them!
Triumphant story to share today, and it involves the Macanudo Cru Royale cigar.
On the 10th hole in the weekly money game I gave my opponents the typical courtesy warning I always do when lighting up. It goes something like this:
“I’d like to kindly inform you that I’m about to light up a cigar. Before I light it I’m giving you the opportunity to surrender.”
They looked at me and chuckled it off a little bit. Then I hit a 330 yard drive. I hadn’t hit a good drive all day. Following two straight pars I came to the long par-3 of about 225 yards. I striped a 4-iron to the center of the green, then drained a 30 footer for a birdie two. Game on. Puff puff.
The rest of the back nine I was in the zone. For the seven holes I was smoking the Cru Royale I had six pars and a birdie. One under par. I made my first and only bogey on the back nine on the last hole. No cigar. But by then the match was over. My partner and I dominated.
