9:39amET Friday

Play has been suspended due to high winds (over 40mph) at St. Andrews and the Open Championship.  The winds are so high that balls won’t stay still in their original positions on the greens.  Once the winds subside, play will resume.

A few scores of note

Louis Oosthuizen shot a 67 today and sits three shots ahead (-12) of yesterday’s leader Rory McIlroy.  Mark Calcavecchia shot a nice 67 in these conditions to move up to 3rd on the leaderboard at -7.  Paul Casey (69 today) is tied for 4th with Lee Westwood (71) at -6.  Tiger Woods is on the course at -5 but hasn’t finished the first hole.  Phil Mickelson finished his 2nd round and sits at even par.

Cut

The current cut line is even par, but in these conditions it is anticipated that the cut will move to +1 or +2.

Low scores abound in the first round at St. Andrews.  Currently there are 70 players under par.  A tie for the lowest round in a major championship by Rory McIlroy was posted, 63.  He hit 17 of 18 greens in regulation.  For once I made a good fantasy pick with Rory.

Tiger Woods is in the clubhouse with a 67 as well as Sean O’Hair (also on my fantasy team).  A note on Tiger:  He has left his Scotty Cameron putter in the garage this week and switched to a new Nike Method putter.  I guess he read my Nike Method Putter review and decided to make the switch.

John (freaking) Daly posted a 66!  There’s something about JD’s and links golf which just works.  All that raw talent seems to jive with links style golf.  John adjusted his driver down a degree and a half and that seems to be working.

Phil Mickelson, Lee Westwood are just starting their rounds and are at even par after two and four holes prespectively.

Many more rounds to go but low scores are the news.  Any players who haven’t posted rounds under par have missed out on a big opportunity today.

This is the 3rd part of a three part hole by hole guide of The Old Course at St. Andrews by my good friend and Old Course caddy John Boyne (Boynie).  Part one is here and part two is here.  My St. Andrews photo gallery (most of which were taken by Boynie) is here.  This piece covers the final six holes of The Old Course, and how a professional golfer should fare. Many thanks to Boynie for this great resource.  ~Tony Korologos

13th, Hole O’ Cross (In), 465 yards, Par4

Now the golf course begins. This magnificent par four plays as the second most difficult hole on the course after the 17th Road Hole not only during the Championship but also day to day.

A Caddy’s Walk Through Of The Old Course At St. Andrews – Part 2 of 3

Note: This is part two of a three part series.  Old Course caddy and friend John Boyne (Boynie) walks us through every shot on every hole at St. Andrews.  What a treat! ~Tony Korologos

7th, High (Out), 371 yards, Par4

One of The Old Course’s quirky holes the 7th fairway criss-crosses with the tee shot for the par 3 11th with which it shares the green. Generally a lot of confusion abounds here with players waiting for others to putt out on the par 3 before they hit their approach shot to the same green. This can be the beginning of the reason why the round, of just 18 holes, will take close to six hours! Unbelievable.
