Singh=Sergio’s Nightmare, TIVO Rant

Yesterday I had a very busy day between playing 18 holes (and getting my clock cleaned), and visiting 3 different mothers and grandmothers for Mother’s Day. When I got home I had the thrilling task of defrosting my refrigerator. While defrosting I started to watch the final round of the Wachovia on my TIVO about about 9pm. I had intentionally not watched the TV or checked the status of the PGA so that I could enjoy the theater more.

Sergio came into the final round in control. This was a great chance for him to notch a victory against a very strong field including Tiger, Vijay, Phil and others. In a previous post I mentioned that I wasn’t quite sure Sergio was ready for the challenge. So I guess I’m tooting my own horn because it was obvious that he was not. He was visibly nervous. He hit some terrible shots under pressure (and an amazing 2 iron as well). He also made some poor course management choices.

Imagine the pressure Sergio was feeling as he was leaking oil on the course as Vijay and Furyk were hot on his tail. He still put himself in position to win the tournament on the last hole but failed to close it out with a birdie. This forced a 3 man playoff between him, Vijay and Furyk.

This is where my post changes from the PGA to a TIVO rant. At the point in time where the playoff was to begin it was midnight my time. My fridge was just about defrosted and I was about to become frosted. They get to the first playoff tee box and Vijay tees his ball up. Then my TIVO stops. It has come to the end of the recording! NOOOOOOOOO!!!!! The originally scheduled program was scheduled to end at this time, and the TIVO wasn’t smart enough to continue recording the extended coverage of the playoff. After 3-4 hours of watching this tournament I then had to jump on the net only to find out that there was a 4 hole playoff. What a bummer. I need to tell the TIVO to record the program AFTER the PGA just in case I guess.

Sergio got knocked out on the first playoff hole. Then Furyk and Singh went 3 more before Singh was victorious. I wish I could have seen the playoff.

Now with another victory Singh strengthens his bid for player of the year. Think he’ll win it? Vote in the poll and we’ll see if the “pundits” are correct this time.

bobbygraceputter2I’ve been in discussions with MacGregor Golf for a few months about doing some reviews of their gear. Finally they sent the first piece of gear for me to review: The Bobby Grace designed V-FOIL M5K-GT. I’ve been using this putter exclusively in my rounds (including tournaments) for about the last 3 weeks.

To be honest, the reason I was so intrigued by this putter is because it just looks cool. This is quite an engineering piece of art considering all of the individual components and the specialized construction of each.

Current Poll

There was some problem where the poll (lower left) wasn’t counting the votes but I’ve fixed it. So if you haven’t done so go ahead and vote for who you think will win player of the year. VJ, Tiger, Phil, Ernie, Retief or “other.”

Tour takes

Some thought Danielle Amiee wouldn’t break 80 in her first LPGA event, the Michelob Ultra Open at Kingsmill. They were close. She managed a 79 in round 1 yesterday. She’s going to make it into into the weekend but only because the 2nd round was washed out and her 6 over score for 11 holes will be thrown out. She gets a mulligan. We’ll see if she can take advantage of it.

Speaking of Kingsmill, Annika is going to have to make up a ton of ground to get to her 6th consecutive LPGA win. But if anyone can do it she can.

By the way: Hey Golf Channel dot com, you can take down your banners for BBIII “all-new episode premiers this Tuesday” now.

Sergio is at -7 and holds the lead after two rounds of the Wachovia Championship. I’m just not sold on Sergio quite yet. He needs some more victories under his belt. This would be a good start if he can hold onto a lead and seal the deal.

Tiger is a little rusty.

And how about Jim Thorpe? He donated all of his winnings from last week (around $250k) to his church. Can you buy your way into Heaven? I guess he’ll find out.

Yesterday’s report

I promised a report from yesterday’s round. Bonneville has awesome greens with great breaks and they are fast. I didn’t putt these greens very well with the demo putter I used. I’m done with my evaluation and I’ll be posting a review of the Mac Gregor V-FOIL M5K-GT in the next few days.

I struggled with the driver but hit these demo irons (soon to be named) very well. Unfortunately I missed a short par putt on 9 to shoot 3 over on the front. The back I had an eagle on the 14th hole (par 5) when I made a completely crazy 60 footer from the lower fringe to the top of a 2 tiered green. Managed an even score on the back for a total of 75. So for two complete rounds of 18 with demo irons and putter I’m 3 over par. I’m quite happy about that.

Tomorrow I play Bonneville again with 7 other buddies in a “money game.” It’s time to bust out the trusty Ping putter I usually use.
