Hack Central

There’s a course about 5 minutes from my house that I avoid at all costs, almost. This is a poorly designed 18 hole course in the space a 9 hole course should occupy. The fairways are right next to each other with no trees so it’s like a battle zone.

I was really needing to play so I ran over to “Hack Central” and got on the waiting list. I was called to the tee with a threesome. I parked myself on the back tees and the threesome was two tees up. I hit my drive and then went down to their tees and introduced myself.

Just seeing these hacks was mind boggling. They must have all come straight from work. They were all wearing long sleeve button up dress shirts and cords. Good grief. One of the dudes was a very big and muscular black guy. He looked like a linebacker for an NFL team.

The linebacker hit the funniest drive I’ve ever seen. He teed his ball up and swung as hard as he could with all of that muscle. His driver just grazed the ball. It “tinked” the ball so lightly that the ball just spun around on the tee! This 240 pound man of a man just hit a golf ball with all of his might and didn’t even knock it off the tee! One in a million.

Oh, I forgot to mention that they all took their shirts off too. Man I was embarrassed. So here are 3 guys in cords with no shirts on golfing. Oh don’t think the pro shop at “Hack Central” cares if you have a collared shirt. They don’t care if you have shirt at all.

The guy takes another mighty swing with his driver and slices it OB. Now he’s going to play smart. He takes his 3 iron out and shanks it right into the cart where his other two shirtless buddies are already talking on their cell phones.

The rest of the round was me giving them all a golf etiquette lesson. They’d start telling a joke right in my backswing. They would be laughing or walking around right behind me while I was putting. What a mental test.

Somehow I managed a 76, but that will be my last trip to Hack Central.

So Long Jack

Jack Nicklaus has announced that his last competitive tournament round will be in the British Open at the birthplace of golf, St. Andrews. Jack won the Open at St. Andrews in 1970 and 1978. The Royal & Ancient Golf Club moved up St. Andrews in the Open rotation to give Jack the chance to play his favorite course one last time.

As a kid I always loved to watch Jack play and I always thought he was going to win. He was one of the constants in the universe. I was 17 years old when he won is last Masters in ’86 and I remember watching that putt on 17 in amazement.

I had the chance at a Senior Tour (now Champions Tour) event to follow Trevino, Palmer and Jack for 18 holes. That was awesome. Jack and Arnie didn’t talk much, but that was probably due to the fact that Trevino covered the talking department well enough for all 3 of them.

Jack is coming to my town in a couple of months to play in a local “event” here and I’m going to try my hardest to meet him and perhaps get him to autograph a piece of my Masters memorabilia.

Jack, thank you.

RadarGolf to release a BPS (Ball Positioning System) that will help you find lost golf balls this fall.

radargolfsystemThe Technology

If James Bond were a golfer he would certainly own a RadarGolf BPS System. This is a system where you have a golf ball with an embedded chip which reflects a specific radio frequency which is transmitted by a small hand held device you keep in your bag or golf cart. The handheld gives you a audio and visual signal levels indicating your proximity to your ball. You find your ball, save yourself strokes, speed up play and lower your frustration.

The range of the system is anywhere from 30 to 100 feet depending on terrain. On flat ground the range is about 40-50 feet. The system actually works better on uphill or downhill slopes with a range of roughly 50-100 feet.

The most dominant player of our era

annikachikfilaNow is a great time to be a golf fan. It seems like every week some great historical event in golf takes place. We have the joy of watching the “Big 5” competing (even though none of them won this week).

All due respect to Mickelson (26 wins), Vijay (27 wins), Goosen (5 wins), Els (15 wins) and Woods (43 wins). Annika has 60 wins as of her 10 shot victory today at the Chick-Fil-A Championship. Annika has more wins than Phil, Vijay and Goosen combined. She has more wins than Woods & Els combined. I could do all the combinations but I think you get the point.

How about another stat for you. Annika’s 10 stroke victory today is twice the number of strokes than Tiger’s margin of victory for all three of his 2005 wins. We have not seen a dominance of the score board like that this year on the PGA Tour.

How about winning 5 in a row, and 6 out her 7 last starts? I’ll take a bet with anyone right now that NO PGA Tour player will win 5 in a row in the next 10 years.

The only thing counting against Annika is that she’s on the LPGA Tour. For that reason, some will discount her accomplishments.
