Today’s take: 107

Since I’m living on a golf course for a few months I’ve gotten into the habit of doing a “ball search” every few days. It’s good bonding time for me and my boy to go out to the course after all the players are done and whack some balls around.

This course is THE tightest course EVER. I’m not kidding. There are holes with hazards down both sides 5 feet outside the fairway. Most of the holes are surrounded by hazard. And the wind blows like hell here quite often.

So there must be tens of thousands of balls out here just waiting to be found. My boy and I found 107 tonight in about a half an hour after dinner. Out of 100 balls I’d say you get about 30 “premium” balls.

So for the next 2-3 months I’ll be living here, I’ll be on a continuous ball hunt to stock my reserves.

Today’s take: 107 balls, 1 chipping club (deep in the forest)
This week’s take: 213 balls

The next “big” crowd favorite

jasongoreJason Gore made a lot of new fans at this year’s US Open.

After firing a 68 in the final round today, Gore just secured a victory at the Nationwide’s Pete Dye Classic.

It’s only a matter of time before Jason Gore is a permanent fixture on the PGA Tour. I think the tour needs a some good new personalities and stories like this guy.

John Daly is going to have some competition soon on the PGA Tour as the #1 “big” crowd favorite…

A Wie bit short

mchellewieSo Michelle Wie missed the cut by a couple of strokes today at the John Deere Classic. She did show some amazing shot making abilities in the process though.

She shot 70-71 to finish -1 for the two rounds. With all the talk about her missing the cut perhaps some perspective of how close she is to competing on the PGA Tour is really the question. Sure she needs to make a cut, but she finished 12 strokes behind the leader after two rounds. Given that pace, she’s a good 5-6 strokes per round short. Can she improve that amount? Heck SHE is an AMATEUR and 15 YEARS OLD. Time will tell.

Another perspective is who missed the cut along with her this week. Nick Price comes to mind. He has been extremely vocal about not allowing women to play on the PGA Tour. And now he shoots a two day total of 141, as does Wie.

Wie finished 3 shots in front of Aaron Baddeley. So far Baddeley has been a pretty boy with not much to back it up on tour.

And why not talk about Wie beating David Duval by 7 strokes. As far as Wie is from contending on tour, Duval is that far from staying on tour.

Browsing Golf Blogger I found this new golf blog: Even Par Round with a female at the helm. Though Miranda may have a fairly new golf blog, she’s a veteran blogger. Best of luck!

Her blogger template looks eerily familiar doesn’t it? Check out my OLD LOCATION of Hooked On Golf Blog.

Harvey Penick was a blogger, he just didn’t know it

littlebluebookIf you don’t know who Harvey Penick is you are missing out. Harvey Penick is probably the most famous golf instructor of all time. For decades he was the instructor at Austin Country Club. Many of the most famous pros ever to play golf have studied with him (Tom Kite, Ben Crenshaw etc). If you recall Crenshaw’s latest (and tearful) Masters victory, that was right after Penick passed away.

Harvey’s most famous book is HARVEY PENICK’S LITTLE RED BOOK. For years Harvey jotted down short thoughts about golf and life in a little red note book… Golf, life (in that order). Hey wow. That wasn’t intentional. There was no real order to his thoughts, they were just random thoughts put to paper in a journal form. If what he did in his book was on the net, it would be a blog.

Harvey’s writing style is so great, you feel like he is there with you telling the stories.

While browsing Golf Blogger one day, I ordered The Plane Truth and for the hell of it picked up Harvey’s Little Blue Book : Game for a Lifetime : More Lessons and Teachings.

I started reading last night when I was quite tired. But I woke right up and got about 100 pages into it before I forced myself to go to sleep. This book has more great stories and thoughts but they are a little longer and more detailed. There are many stories about specific players he taught worked with, along with some excellent golf course architecture thoughts and rants. (Jay).

I strongly recommend getting your hands on ANYTHING from Harvey Penick.
