Head behind the ball

In this week’s Pro Tip we’re working on head position. You want your head just behind the ball as Byron’s head is during his setup in picture #1 below.
headposition1

During your takeaway and follow through try not to move your head and upper body laterally. See how Byron’s head is still in the same position at the top of his back swing in the pic below.

In the last pic below notice how Byron’s head position is still in the correct place right at impact.

Try to keep your head behind the ball as long as possible. Keeping the proper head position behind the ball will help prevent you from hitting blocks to the right. Your head will naturally move forward when you arrive in your finish position.

Virtual tour of St. Andrews

You can get a great virtual and real tour of St. Andrews on the Open Championship’s official site.
They have a flash version which is nice and within the same window is the actual video flyby of each hole. Very cool. Perhaps the nicest touch is the hole by hole commentary by Peter Alliss. As a sound engineer by trade, I love the sound of his voice.

British Open Merchandise

Only after I order from the other side of the pond does my pal let me know that British Open Merchandise is available through Adidas Golf. Timing is everything.

But upon examination it looks like they are doing apparel only. So the logo golf balls and divot tools I ordered are still golden…

Ogio Grom Stand Bag

I love companies that put traditional thinking and design aside and try new ideas. Ogio obviously is one of those companies. Ogio doesn’t think out of the box, they build the coolest and most “pimped out” box to begin with.

With Utah’s snowcapped Wasatch mountains as a backdrop, Ogio makes gear bags and packs for many different “activity” sports. “Activity sports” to Ogio would be motocross, surfing, snowboarding, skateboarding and (last but not least) golf!

Ogio Grom Stand Bag

I’ve always admired Ogio’s golf bags either in the golf shop or on the course. I’ve looked at their innovations and ideas and often thought “why doesn’t anyone else do that?” or “why didn’t anyone else think of that?” For some reason I’ve always picked up the traditional and conservative offerings from other companies, but now I’m happy to say I’m an Ogio fan.

Looks

The Grom is a very good looking carry/stand bag. The lines and look are very pleasing to the eye. The first round I put it into play my golf buddies noticed on the first tee that I had a new bag. The looks drew them to it and the great features sold them. A round or two later, two of my pals had bought the same bag in different colors and were proudly showing them off.

Functionality

The first thing I noticed about the Grom (and Ogio’s other bags) is how well designed and wide the opening for the clubs is. My gripe about another company’s carry bags that I’ve been using is that the club opening is too small. In their effort to make the bag small and light, the opening size was compromised. This can be a real pain when you have either many fairway woods or clubs with covers. And it can really be a pain when you have very tacky grips on the clubs. With the smaller opening and shell of the bag, my tacky grips often made getting the club in and out of the bag a real chore. I’d grab my 7 iron and two other irons would come out with it.

Welcome to British Open Championship Week

britishopenlogoNow that it is 12:01am on the Monday of British Open week I’m making my first related post!

I’m calling it the British Open because that’s what us Americans call it. Yes I know it should be called “The Open Championship” but that is a little vague.

To celebrate I purchased some goodies directly from the official Open Championship shop. I’m mainly a collector of Masters stuff, but I couldn’t resist getting some Open toys.

Here is the link to the Open Championship official web site.

And why am I blogging at 12:01am on a Monday? I’m just a die hard.

My prediction for this year’s winner is going to be one of those “way out on a limb” ones:
Tiger Woods
