The Experiment

I played a round of golf today with my pop at his awesome country club. Rough life eh?

It was lawn mower day out there so we found our share of chewed up golf balls. Since I had already shot a number much higher than my regular round I decided I’d do a small experiment.

I often retire golf balls that have scuffs, scratches, dirt or other blemishes. I put them in the shag bag or use them on tight courses during heavy winds. I’ve often wondered how much damage a golf ball’s cover can have without seriously compromising it’s performance.

Hooked on tweaking

I’ve been fairly happy with the 3 column layout of the site. It doesn’t look like many other blogs, and I haven’t seen ONE golf blog that looks similar.

BUT I am about to start a bit of a “tweaking” period for the site. I’m going to play with some different column sizes and most likely a fixed width. I’m still researching the average screen resolution of my visitors to determine the size, but I’ve found that something like 98% of most web surfers are at 800×600 or higher. So if you’re smaller than that you’ll soon be SOL here (unless you like scrolling).

The first tweak is not a visible one but it has already been implemented. This tweak is adding a link to the golf ball graphic at the top of all pages to the main page. You no longer have to click on “blog home” to get to the home page. You can click the golf ball. Thanks to skostiuk for that suggestion.

The 2nd tweak (also a skostiuk idea) was to move the recent posts up higher. That only made sense.

There will be more to come, so be aware you may see some slight changes. And once again, keep the suggestions rolling in!

Site comments requested please!

Ok folks. My template here has two fixed columns on the outside which always remain the same size. The center column (where the posts and comments are) is a variable width.

From a design standpoint it is tougher to make certain articles and images format well with the variable width of the center. Plus, I have some sponsors who will be putting in some banners soon and it is difficult to specify what exact width these banners would need to be.

In the interest of making it a better experience here, I’m considering changing from the current fluid layout to a fixed one. This would make design a little easier on my end. But before I spend any time on this I’d like to get some opinions.

If you wouldn’t mind, please comment on my design/layout with any opinions you have, good or bad. And please also comment on the following questions:

Do you prefer fixed width or variable width?
What screen resolution are you running?
Is there anything about the current layout you do and don’t like?
What is missing here?
What would you like me to get rid of?

All Smiles For Lefty

Lefty notched his 2nd major championship and his 4th victory of the season today. This elevates him to another level in my opinion, like him or not. There are plenty of players out there with one major, but winning two is whole new ball game.

Some thoughts:
In the last two years Tiger has two majors, Phil has two majors.
Phil is now half way to a career slam.
The “Big 4” turned into the “Big 5,” but now it should be called the “Big 3.”
