John Daly has signed on with Maxfli and TaylorMade, joining the likes of Sergio Garcia, Kenny Perry, Justin Rose and others. He’ll be playing BlackMax golf balls (click here for my BlackMax review). He’ll also be adorned with Maxfli gloves, hat, logos on his bag etc. JD will also be slinging TaylorMade woods and irons.

The press release from TaylorMade (below) doesn’t mention wedges or putter.

Speaking of Sergio, it’s funny that Sergio has a beer sponsor and JD doesn’t.

Entertaining day 3 at Doral aka Wanna buy a watch?

Day 3 was a fun round to watch at Doral. There were some very interesting happenings in the head to head match between Tiger and Phil today.

Tiger’s new swing?

Tiger introduced a new swing Saturday that I’ve not really seen to this point. It’s like a combination of a flat Justin Leonard swing plane and the Tiger stinger/punch shot. Tiger’s swing plane and follow through are very flat and he doesn’t finish high. Rather he finishes like he’s trying to punch a low iron shot into the wind. He knocked one 354 yards Saturday with that swing.

But the flatter swing plane may have also introduced some other “issues” with Tiger however. He started pushing many of his shots to the right. Pushes can come easy when your plane is more flat.

Want a drink Tiger?

Tiger also did something I can’t ever remember seeing. He knocked an 8-iron in the water short of the par 3 ninth green. That shot looked like one of mine! Hey, I can hit shots just like Tiger.

Tiger did suck it up on the back nine, recording 3 birdies in a row en route to a -4 round and a 2 shot lead.

The Phil watch incident

By far the most interesting and funny happening today was the “Phil watch” incident.

Phil beaned a spectator. Happens all the time. But this time Phil’s ball hit the man right on the watch and destroyed it. Phil apologized and finished out the hole. Then he came back and slipped the watch bearer some cash. He didn’t even look at it, the guy just put it in his pocket. Then all his buddies were giving him grief so he pulled it out and uncrumpled two $100 bills.

Dear Phil…Hit me. I could use some extra cash.

Let’s develop a practice regimen

When I go to the range I don’t seem to have much of a purpose (other than trying to figure out how to hit the damn ball). I’ll warm up with some wedges, go up to a 7 or 6-iron, 4-iron, driver, 3W etc. I usually swing a club until I make 4-5 good shots in a row then I’ll move on. I’ll just hit whatever I feel like until I run out of balls. I don’t have anything in particular I’m working on. I’m not thinking about my take away, ball position, swing plane, stance, grip, ball flight or anything.

As a musician when I practice I have something I’m working on. I have exercises I go through (like scales or rudiments). When I go to the gym (which obviously isn’t enough), I have a specific workout. I do cardio and upper body on one day. Next workout I do cardio and lower body etc. My gym has a nice little sheet which shows you all the exercises you should be working on for your specific goals and schedule. Why is there not anything I’ve seen like this for golf?

Let’s develop a workout plan for golf practice here. I’d like some opinions. I’m going to assume working out on the range about 3-4 times per week (that’s the most popular poll selection when I asked readers how often they go to the range).

The plan would look something like this:

Day 1 – full swing with short irons or wedges – 1 hour 15 minutes:
1. Warm up, stretch, loosen up
2. PW for 15 minutes
3. SW/LOB 15 minutes
4. 9-iron 10 minutes
5. 8-iron 10 minutes
6. Chip/Pitch 10 minutes
7. Putt 15 minutes

Day 2 – short game – 1 hour 15 minutes:
1. Warm up, stretch, loosen up
2. Bump & runs for 15 minutes from X feet
3. Chip 15 minutes from X feet
4. Flops 15 minutes from X feet
5. Green side bunker 15 minutes
6. Putt 15 minutes

Day 3 – long game – 1 hour 15 minutes:
1. Warm up, stretch, loosen up
2. Standard driver shots 15 minutes
3. Fade driver 10 minutes
4. Draw driver 10 minutes
5. 3W 15 minutes
6. 5W/Hybrid 10 minutes
7. Putt for 15 minutes

Day 4 – irons – 1 hour 15 minutes:
1. Warm up, stretch, loosen up
2. 7-iron 10 minutes
3. 3-iron/hybrid 10 minutes
4. 6-iron 10 minutes
6. 4-iron/hybrid 10 minutes
7. 5-iron 10 minutes
8. 10 minutes of fun shots with any club (fade, punch, draw)
9. Putt for 15 minutes

Tiger & Phil in the last group today at Doral

Written by: Tony Korologos | Saturday, March 4th, 2006

Ah this is what we’ve all been wanting, Tiger and Phil head to head in round 3 today. It even came a day earlier than last year. They’re both tied for the lead (-13) at Doral.

A bit lost in the Tiger/Phil hype is the fact that there are two other players tied for the lead right now: Scott Verplank and Camilo Villegas.

Camilo Villegas will give Sergio or any other pretty boy on the tour a run for his money with the ladies. He put on a great display of ball striking and putting yesterday. And the way he reads his putts is amazing. He lays down on the green in a one handed push up position, making the muscles in his arms bulge out even more. If I tried to read a green like that they’d need to bring an a forklift to carry me off the green.
