There’s a very cool event coming June 8th and 9th, where celebrity athletes from the four major U.S. sports (football, baseball, basketball, hockey) will be competing against each other on the golf course. Now we can finally put to rest the questions about which pro athletes make the best golfers.
The Format
The “Team Challenge” is a unique format to say the least. There are elements of Ryder Cup, Skins Game and “accelerated scoring” which gives a team more points if they win by a larger margin.
Charles Barkley, all star basketball player and one of the NBA’s top 50, is the commissioner of the Challenge. He’s also a non playing captain of the Challenge’s basketball team. Having seen his golf swing, “non playing” is a good thing… 🙂
Purse & Charity
The purse is $250,000, $100K to the winner. Each team’s winnings are donated to the charity of their choice.
Players
Football:
John Elway, Michael Strahan, LaDainian Tomlinson, Drew Brees
Basketball:
Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith, Jason Kidd, George Gervin, Clyde Drexler
Baseball:
Ozzie Smith, George Brett, Vince Coleman, Bret Saberhagen
Hockey:
Mario Lemieux, Brett Hull, Grant Fuhr, Pierre Larouche
YOU Mr. “ProCoach,” will call the shots
The Team Challenge will have a very cool feature which hasn’t been done before. “ProCoaches” are people who sign up and act as interactive coaches from their computers or mobile devices. ProCoaches will have input on strategy decisions and have an actual real impact on the outcome of the match! The charities will also benefit as $1 of revenue will be added to the prize for each ProCoach.
The all star blog/media team
Not to be outdone by the sports superstars, a superstar golf blog team has been assembled. For the first time ever, the two “queens of the golf blogosphere” will be in action on scene. Yes, Jay Flemma and I will be there blogging, broadcasting, announcing, interacting, and who knows what else. Wait a second, Jay and I have teamed up for golf blogging events around the country numerous times. So that can’t be what I’m talking about. Ok, you guessed it… Kristen “The Golf Chick” and Patricia “The Golf Girl” will be there with Jay and me as well!

Pun intended!
My friend Gary at Date A Golfer has a very nice golf dating site. At Date A Golfer golf singles can find a golf match, so to speak. I joined DAG years ago in hopes that Annika Sorenstam would find me there but unfortunately that didn’t pan out.
New Design
The new Date A Golfer has a new site design. The old design was OK, but the new one is much cleaner and better organized. The profile pages (pictured) are laid out much better and some small bugs in there I found before are now gone.
New Features
The new Date A Golfer has some better detailed profile information for fine tuning your search for a golf mate. Users can now enter info about their interests, golf game, where they play and more. I really like how when you enter golf courses you play, others can click them to see other members who play those same courses. That’s a cool feature.
If you are a golf single in the market for a golf mate, check out Date A Golfer.
Man I’ve been in a bit of a golf blog funk following the Masters. It’s sort of like a drug addict coming down off a high…
I’m done with it now though and I’m refreshed and energized to get back to my daily (sometimes more) golf gear reviews, course reviews and other golf takes.
Tiger Woods underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on his previously troubled left knee. This marks the 3rd time he’s had this knee worked on (1994, 2002).
He had the surgery at the Healthsouth Surgery Center in Park City, Utah. Hey that’s about 35 minutes from my place.
Tiger is expected to be out for 4-6 weeks and back in time for the U.S. OPEN, so take him off your fantasy teams!
Special note to Tiger
Tiger, I wish you the best of luck on your recovery. I’m a short drive from you if you are rehabbing in your place in DV. If you need some company, let me know. I’d be happy grab my DVD of Caddyshack, some popcorn, and make the short drive up there to help out a fellow golfer on the injured reserve list.
🙂
The wind is howling
2:00: The players on the first page or two of the leaderboard will be teeing off soon. Phil Mickelson is at -2 still on the 3rd hole. He’s using a different putter today. Ian Poulter just went to -4 after making a birdie on #2. Retief Goosen just missed about a four foot birdie putt on #2. He’ll stay at -2.
2:40: Shaky start for Immelman and Snedeker. Immelman missed the fairway on #1 and Snedeker missed the green. They’re both looking at bogey and yes, two bogies. Tiger has picked up a shot on the 1st hole having pared it.
3:05: Tiger is in the greenside bunker on the par-3 #4. Meanwhile Brand Snedeker just EAGLED #2 with an improbable putt through the fringe and is tied for the lead. Immelman made par. Paul Casey just stiffed one on #3 and should have birdie to go to -8. Yup, -8 now for Casey and he’s two back. OH NO Tiger just power-lipped his par putt and now he’s got a four footer for bogey. Bogey.
