Quick takes
I’ve got about a half an hour of time left on my expensive hotel room internet connection so here are a few quick takes about Friday’s U.S. Open results.
Cut: +10
As I mentioned yesterday I didn’t think Phil Mickelson was going to be a factor with the injured wrist and watching him play. His current streak of 30 made cuts in majors is done. He missed the cut after shooting a 77 today.
Sergio Garcia is a player I’ve said will never win a major. I still stand behind that statement. Anyone who wants to bet me a beer on that I’m game. Sergio missed the cut.
Retief Goosen, who once seemed to have ice water flowing through his veins, missed the cut. He’s on a slide, no longer in the “big five.”
Adam Scott shot an 82 today and missed the cut.
In the mix
Tiger Woods shot a 74 and is only five shots off the lead. In a U.S. Open that can be one or two holes. He’s right in the thick of it.
There are a lot of “ball strikers” (Furyk, Toms etc) within a few shots of the lead, as to be expected.
Bubba Watson? Holy smokes Bubba Watson is in the final group on Saturday! Wow. Bubba’s game doesn’t really strike me as “U.S. Open” material. But he’s managed two great rounds and he’s one shot behind Angel Cabrera, a slight dark horse.
