Perhaps the folks at OGIO have ESP. They must have known that my old bag was falling apart. You see, I play a lot of golf. I wear gear out. My previous bag, made by another manufacturer, was held together by cable ties and duct tape. Just in time the new OGIO Wisp arrived as a product review submission!
Naturally I put the bag into play immediately to do my “extensive” testing. How does this OGIO Wisp bag fare? Lets take a look. (more…)
My flags are flying at half mast today. I just got a terrible phone call. My local pro just informed me of the passing of a long time golf buddy, Dave Shields. I’m sure I played more rounds of golf with Dave than anyone, easily over 1000 times at my home course. He was a fixture there as was I. We used to play every evening from mid-afternoon until what we called “dark thirty” for years.
Dave was the guy who could hit a flop shot so high and soft that he could catch it. I even caught him doing that on video (below), on the #10 tee at our home course.
Dave practiced harder than anyone. He practiced so much with his wedges that he had two sets, one for the range and one for the course. He literally wore the grooves off of the faces until they were gone. He never wore golf shoes either, opting to wear hiking boots.
I had the pleasure of sipping a nice free frosty beverage when Dave carded an ace on the par-3 8th a couple of years ago (picture).
Dave and I had many great times on the golf course and did several road trips. We did Mesquite, southern Utah and Heber Utah many times. We played golf in hurricane force winds in a town called… “Hurricane.”
Dave had left the course a few months ago and I hadn’t heard from him in a while. I came to find out that he went back east and that is where he passed.
I’m very shocked and saddened right now. Sorry to see you go Dave. The next toast is for you.
My putting is great. My fairways hit is about 80%. If I miss a green in regulation though, I’m in trouble. As a current 2.5 handicap I struggle with my short game. When I hit greens I can shoot in the low 70’s or high 60’s. If I miss greens it can be ugly, as my up-and-down percentage, which I track with GolfStats, is about 20-25%. As they say on Twitter: #lame.
I had the opportunity to submit my video to PGA.com for a lesson on their cool new feature, Free Lesson Fridays. FLF is a fun and educational part of PGA.com in which renowned golf teachers help out folks who submit their questions and game issues. My lesson, linked here or by clicking the image below, was quite an eye opener.
I didn’t realize I broke my left arm. Shoot. I have the dreaded left arm chicken wing! Somebody kill me now. I also didn’t know that my short game shots were mostly hands and not shoulders. And last I didn’t realize the club head passed my hands. These are all things I know are not good, but didn’t realize I was doing them until a PGA instructor showed me.
I’m thankful for the video lesson, and for PGA.com exposing my weak short game to millions of their readers. Exposing my short game to the public is worse than those naked pictures I accidentally posted online of myself, the ones with the lamp shade. That’s a post for another day…
Jim Flick, world class instructor of hundreds of PGA Tour pros including Jack Nicklaus and this past week’s Charles Schwab Cup winner Tom Lehman, passed away today at the age of 82 from pancreatic cancer.
Unfortunately I never had the opportunity to meet Mr. Flick, but I know many who did ant they have nothing but great things to say about him.
RIP Jim Flick.
