Funny story to lead off this review. I’d received a SLEEVE of Hex Black golf balls from Callaway for a review. I had to laugh, because they obviously didn’t know about my home course (or the bad state of my game right now for that matter). My home course has as many hazards as a mine field in Baghdad. If the winds are up, it is possible to lose a sleeve on my home course in the first 1-3 holes. I told them that I usually like to play with a ball for many rounds and that a sleeve wouldn’t be enough. Shortly after that, a 2nd sleeve arrived. “Great,” I thought to myself. “Now my review will last maybe five holes.”
A few rounds ago I put a Hex Black into play. I then proceeded to play 18, 18 and 23 holes (59 holes) with ONE Hex Black. I shot the picture above right after 51 holes. With the 2nd sleeve of Hex Blacks in my bag I went out today for another 18 with the 59 hole ball. I played the front nine in 37 with birdies on #7 and #9. I decided that after so many holes I should retire the ball. I pulled out a brand new shiny Hex Black on #10 tee and proceeded to knock the darn thing into the hazard right of the fairway. One shot, one new ball gone. How can I play 68 straight holes without losing one ball, then lose a brand new ball in one swing? There’s a four letter word which perfectly answers that question: GOLF. Today is Rory McIlory’s 23rd birthday. Best birthday wishes to Rory.
22 was a fantastic year. Can’t wait to see what 23 brings for this amazing talent.
I finally retreaded my golf shoes. I’ve started to notice errant shots because my feet have been slipping. Every spring I go through this. I lose power and accuracy and being the genius I am, I figure it out about two months too late. So a couple of days ago, I replaced my old spikes with a set of new Champ Scorpion Stinger spikes.
Scorpion Stinger Features
The Stinger is made from a soft “durometer” TPU plastic. This plastic can somehow provide comfort and padding, yet is still durable.
The forks of the spikes have a spring action, called spring-flex by Champ. what I like about that is that the shoe can sort of auto-level itself for best traction. The forks are designed to minimize marks on the green. I’m definitely cool with that feature. The greens I play are bumpy enough!
A very useful function of these spikes is the wear indicator. You can see the “C” in the middle of the spike. When the spike is worn to the point of needing replacement, the C turns solid. I have yet to see this happen as my spikes are freshly installed, but it is nice to know I have a visual indicator telling me when to replace them.
Compatible Fasteners
Many golf shoes have different fastening systems. The Scorpion Stinger is available for shoes using Small-Thread, TRI-LOK and Q-Lok systems. The set I changed out were Tri-Loks, and they solidly click in with a fraction of a turn.
On The Course
Changing out my old spikes was easy, once I got my hands on a decent tool. I’m now enjoying superior traction over what I had previously. My feet are no longer slipping. I’m also noticing some extra power/distance in my shots. My base is much more solid.
Conclusion
Check your spikes. You may be losing some performance, distance and accuracy if they’re worn. I did and now I’m benefiting from more power and control, along with better stability. The Stingers have been great so far and I’m glad I have them installed. It will be interesting to see how long they last.
The creativity of golf inventors and golf manufacturers never ceases to amaze me. Did the golf world need a billionth golf towel? No. But after using the Towelmate I may have changed my tune, including tunes from my iPod and iPhone which are in a hidden compartment INSIDE my towel! Huh?
Towelmate
Towelmate is a golf towel made from soft 100% cotton terry. But Towelmate is much more than a golf towel. This towel has several nice features/functions. Let’s take a look.
Golf Side
The Towelmate has several sides. First is the GOLF side of the towel, which is marked by the embroidered word “GOLF.” (more…)
