T9 at Salt Lake City Amateur

I’m happy to post a final report, though a couple days late, from the Salt Lake City Amateur.  I’m proud to announce that I not only reached my goal of finishing in the money, I made it deep into the dough.

Conditions were tough Sunday.  The pins were in places I’d never seen in the hundreds of times I’ve played Bonneville Golf Course.  I found that out on the par-5 1st hole, when my 3rd shot hit the green in regulation, but was on the top tier of the front pinned green.  Toast.  Guaranteed 3-putt.

I came back from that tough start though by knocking a 9-iron stiff on #2 and birdieing that hole for the 2nd time in two days.  Funny game.  Haven’t made birdie on that hole since I can remember and got two in a row in the SLC Am.

The rest of the round I’d struggle and grind my way, trying not to melt down.  I kept ending up short sided on my misses, or above the hole.  I was close to losing my temper badly, but I did my best to keep it under control.

At the end of my round I figured I’d shot myself out of it was a crowd pleasing 81, five shots worse than my decent opening round of 76.  As it turned out, the winds and tough conditions took their toll on everyone. Even the eventual champ of the tournament, who shot 64 on the first day, shot 10 shots worse the 2nd day.

At the end of the tournament, I figured out that there were only eight players ahead of me in my flight. Knowing that they were paying out 18 spots, I figured I’d be T9 and that is exactly where I ended up.  Biggest win for me in this event, and in the money for the 2nd year in a row.  Up to last year I’d never finished inside the greenbacks.

Buddy Dalton wins Salt Lake City Amateur B flite

Buddy wins B flite

My friend Dalton, who I played with both days, was in first place by two shots after round one. He also shot 76 on that first day.  He managed to keep it under control enough to win B flite by one shot, collect a nice trophy (pictured) and collect $700 in prize money.  Congrats buddy.

Dalton and I also teamed up as a two man against several other groups.  We went undefeated best ball against all of them, and collected a little extra cash at the end of the day, which didn’t suck.
