If you’re done blogging take it down

In my last post I talked about some dying or dead golf blogs. I think if you’ve left your golf blog for dead there are some things you should do.

1. Take it down. There are other golf blogs trying to “break in” to the golf blog world. It sucks for them and anyone else trying to get any kind of search engine ranking when some other golf blog that hasn’t been updated for a year is still ranking much higher on google.

2. If you don’t take it down, at least turn off your comments. There are a couple of golf blogs who’s comments are now a breeding ground for spam comments. Do us all a favor and do what you can to prevent spam comments!

3. Let us know you’re done. Rather than just disappearing, leave a post letting your readers know. MJ did just that that.

4. Us bloggers who still blog and have blogrolls should take the dead blogs OFF your blog roll. Perhaps after “x” number of months. Perhaps something like 6 months or so.

Doing so will stop pointing readers and search engines their way.

Indeed, good advice. But I understand why it’s not followed. After all, if you decide to quit blogging (or are forced to), likely it’s due to lack of time or interest. Both time and an interest are required to do the favors (take it down, turn off comments, write a farewell letter, etc.) requested. 😛

I think these are reasonable suggestions and we all should adhere to them.

I concur, but I agree with iacas too. Unfortunately, if someone were to stop blogging, they would most likely just quit altogether, and not want to do these things. Not to mention that they might want to keep it up if it has any google ads.

However, I would definitely expect them to post one last time that they were not posting again.
