Dan Weil at FoxSports.com has a piece about the declining participation in the sport of golf.
Nuggets I found interesting in this piece:
“The total number of golf rounds played in this country peaked in 2000, and the total number of adults playing the game was lower last year than in 2001.” I think this is due to the state of the economy in 2000 and the drop off in 2001 obviously due to 911. Tiger peaking at that time may have a little to do with it as well.
“Facilities are hostile to the newcomer, and other participants are hostile to the newcomer.” What?
“Golf loses two out of three players who pick up the sport each year.” It ain’t easy and it ain’t cheap.
“Green fees including a cart will cost a player at a public course about $100 per round.” Not in my neck of the woods. Here it is anywhere from $30-40. Resort courses are $75.
“Golf also is time consuming, with about five hours needed to complete 18 holes.” It shouldn’t, but sometimes it does.
I don’t know where that dude gets his information from but that sure as hell doesn’t sound anything accurate around my neck of the woods. $50 tops for 80% of public courses w/cart on the weekend.
5 hours only happens when a big LPGA event is going on and you have 10 groups of older women playing a round of golf but walking instead of riding…otherwise a little over 4 is how long it takes me.
The public course down the road from me charges $12/Canadian for a round 🙂 Sure it’s not Sawgrass or Augusta, the greens are pristine, but when you gotta play it’ll do. People play fast here too, on a busy afternoon, 3 1/2 hours for a full round.
rather, “the greens are not pristine” 🙂
