My kids were asking me what is inside a golf ball tonight. So I took an old Titleist Professional 90 and cut it open.
We found the world’s longest rubber band inside. The ball started crackling like rice crispies and expanding. It then kind of exploded as it unwound, exposing the core. My kids thought I was pretty cool for showing them this.
My kids now refer to a wound ball as “old fashioned.” Their education continues.
I’ve never opened a golf ball before – I’ve seen range balls sliced open from lawn mowers but have never opened one myself – how would you go about doing it?
I just took a pair of garden clippers and started clipping all around the equator.
You wouldn’t find the rubber bands these days though, unless someone out there is still making a wound ball.
Hacksaw. Vice.
Old fashioned, but not old (like their old man). 😉
Funny, I just did this yesterday with a bunch of balls .. even two of those old fashioned wound balls you mentioned, used a bandsaw instead of hack/vice… balls slide right through.

Sorry, that link above is the post I made on the freegolfinfo forums about slicing those balls… lots of pics to show what happened.
