Get out your granola bars and your organic raisins. Now you can convert your golf cart to a more “green” version by installing this $1900 solar panel to the roof.

Al Gore was spotted golfing with one of these carts last week and is proposing that golfers receive carbon offsets if they install the unit on their golf carts.

Solar Golf Cart

Go Green and save money with a solar powered golf cart. It is easy to convert your Club Car DS or E-Z-GO Med/TXT to solar power for a fraction of the cost of a new solar golf cart. For every one and three-quarters hours that the golf cart is outside in peak sun, it will go one mile (an average of 5 miles a day) without being plugged in. The cart becomes a portable electric generator-what a benefit for campers in remote areas! Using solar rather than fossil fuel power on the golf cart reduces the CO2 released into the air by 452 pounds per year. For an individual, your return on investment is 20% in the first year. Further, take a 30% deduction off your Federal income taxes for going solar; in many states, the solar purchase is also exempt from sales tax. I tried to consider this from the capitalist pig perspective (my usual), thinking that since gas is $4/gal. maybe it’s worth it. Unfortunately, 5 miles a day won’t cut it for more than one round. That means the most it can do is 365 rounds per year (in a warm climate). Say a regular golf cart uses a gallon per round. That would save over $1400 in gas. So after a couple of years, it probably starts being worth it. Then you have the tax breaks.

So, while it may have hippie origins, it could be worth it.

  2. Double Eagle, you forget that other “green” solutions are very popular and politically correct, yet they have no basis in statistical fact that they’re any more eco-friendly than other solutions. Just the fact that you’d have one of these would get some all worked up into a frenzy, whether or not it really saved energy or prevented “global warming.”

Do you also get a rebate from the local power company?

This past May, Sebonack Golf Club in Southhampton, NY converted 39 of their 40 Golf carts into Solar. Earlier this year, the Jockey Club Kau Sai Chau Public Golf Course in Hong Kong became the first club in the world to outfit its entire fleet of golf carts with Solar tops. Both claim an annual savings of over $50,000.00 US by going Solar. Hawaii Prince Golf course is on the band wagon as well. They just purchased 10 solar golf cart systems for their fleet. This is definitely a trend that should be watched. I am a dealer for a unique Peel and Stick Solar Golf Cart System that works on ANY golf cart. Custom Cart, Specialized Cart, EZ-GO, Club Car, Yamaha, etc. If you would like more information, please feel free to contact me. http://www.solarforgolfcarts.com
