TaylorMade has introduced some new toys!
First they’ve introduced the r5 Dual TP driver. Seems to me I remember our buddies over at TM saying “there’s no new driver coming out”… Now we know what that means next time eh?
Second they’ve introduced fairway woods to match their r7 drivers: The r7 TP Fairway Woods. Now they have fairway woods with the same cool movable weight technology as their r7 drivers!
I always seem to stumble across these news items right when I’m about to go to bed for the night. Since I’m too tired to elaborate now I’m going to include the press releases from TM (which are not easy to find, especially at the TM web site).
TaylorMade Introduces r7 TP Fairway Woods

TaylorMade, the No. 1 brand of fairway wood on the PGA Tour, has introduced the r7 TP fairway wood, which incorporates TaylorMade’s movable weight technology, a revolutionary technology that gives players the power to change the clubhead’s center of gravity (CG) location to promote different types of trajectories. TaylorMade’s movable weight technology was introduced last year in the r7 quad driver, currently the No. 1 driver model on the PGA Tour.
The r7 TP is a titanium fairway wood engineered with two TaylorMade Launch Control (TLC) ports positioned low in the back of the clubhead, near the heel and toe. Installing TLC cartridges of differing weights in the TLC ports allows the player to move the clubhead’s CG toward either the toe or heel to promote varying degrees of draw bias and fade bias, as well as to promote a neutral, or straight, ball flight.
Included with the r7 TP fairway are four TLC cartridges – a 2-gram cartridge, two 8-gram cartridges and a 14-gram cartridge. The TLC Wrench, which is necessary to remove and install TLC cartridges is not included but can be purchased separately at TaylorMade retailers or at http://shop.taylormadegolf.com, as can additional TLC cartridges and accessories.
To save the weight necessary to incorporate movable weight technology into the r7 TP, titanium construction was required. Titanium’s lower density allowed TaylorMade engineers to create a lower and deeper inherent CG location in the r7 TP as compared to the V Steel. The r7 TP’s inherently low and deep CG works with TaylorMade’s movable weight technology to create new CG positions that dramatically and positively alter the player’s trajectory.
In comparison to the TaylorMade V Steel, which is currently the No. 1 fairway wood model on the PGA Tour, the new r7 TP fairway woods boast the same moment of inertia (MOI). That’s unusual, since a titanium wood sized similarly to a steel wood generally delivers a lower MOI, because titanium weighs less. However, by spacing the r7 TP’s TLC ports and TLC cartridges widely, TaylorMade engineers were able to boost the clubhead’s MOI high enough to equal the V Steel. Meaning that, like the V Steel, the r7 TP delivers excellent forgiveness on mis-hits.
The use of titanium as a clubhead material also allowed TaylorMade engineers to lower the center of gravity (CG) and move it farther back in the head, helping to make the r7 TP more playable from a wide variety of conditions.
Additionally, the r7 TP features a refined version of the V-shaped sole employed by the TaylorMade V Steel. Shaping the sole like a V results in diminished turf-resistance, resulting in increased playability and power.
The r7 TP fairway wood family includes a 13° Tour Spoon, 15° 3-wood, 17.5° 5-wood and 20° 7-wood. Stock shafts include Fujikura Vista Pro 80 (graphite) and Dynamic Gold (steel). Both are available in extra stiff, stiff and regular flexes. The Vista Pro 80 is Fujikura’s most popular fairway wood shaft on the PGA Tour.
Like other members of TaylorMade’s TP line, r7 TP fairway woods will feature a special badge on the toe to make it easily identifiable as a TP product.
TaylorMade r7 TP fairway woods will become available at retail beginning in mid June at a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $500 per club with graphite shaft and $450 per club with steel shaft.

TaylorMade Introduces r5 dual TP

TaylorMade Golf has introduced the r5 dual TP, a new driver that combines the extreme size and forgiveness of TaylorMade’s r5 dual titanium driver platform with TaylorMade’s movable weight technology, a revolutionary technology that gives players the power to change the clubhead’s center of gravity (CG) location to promote different types of trajectories.
“When we introduced the r5 dual Type D and r5 dual Type N drivers last year, they were the most forgiving drivers that TaylorMade had ever created,” says Tom Olsavsky, director of product creation. “We took the clubhead size and shape of the Type N and combined it with TLC technology to create the r5 dual TP, resulting in a driver that combines tremendous forgiveness with exceptional workability.”
The r5 dual TP incorporates two TaylorMade Launch Control (TLC) ports positioned in the back of the clubhead at the heel and the toe. TaylorMade engineers positioned the r5 dual TP’s TLC ports strategically low and at the clubhead’s perimeter, where they help to pull the CG deeper into the clubhead and away from the face, making it easier to launch the ball on a high, strong, long-carrying ball flight. At the same time the weight and position of the TLC ports and cartridges significantly increases the r5 dual TP’s moment of inertia (MOI), resulting in increased forgiveness on mis-hits.
Included with the r5 dual TP are six TLC cartridges: a 2-gram cartridge, a 4-gram cartridge, two 6-gram cartridges, an 8-gram cartridge and a 10-gram cartridge. Also included with the r5 dual TP is a TLC wrench, red carrying case for the wrench and cartridges, and a state-of-the-art headcover with a secure magnetic seal. At 450 cubic centimeters, the r5 dual TP clubhead is exceptionally large. This large-sized clubhead is made possible by TaylorMade’s Super-Thin Wall (STW) casting technology, which allows for clubhead walls that are 20% thinner than those of a typical titanium wood. STW is also used in TaylorMade’s r7 quad, r7 quad TP, r7 quad ht, and r5 dual Type N and r5 dual Type D drivers.
The r5 dual TP is engineered with an exceptionally deep face, which increases the player’s opportunity to achieve “vertical-gear effect.” Vertical-gear effect refers to what happens when impact is made with the upper part of the clubface, above the CG. When that occurs, the upper portion of the clubhead rotates slightly backward at impact while the lower portion rotates forward, which counteracts the backspin normally created by clubface loft. The result is a higher launch angle and less backspin, a combination that promotes greater distance.
The r5 dual TP’s clubface also includes TaylorMade’s renowned Inverted Cone Technology (ICT), which dramatically expands the clubface’s COR zone for higher average ball speed and consistently longer, straighter drives.
The r5 dual TP is engineered with a square clubface alignment, in keeping with the preferences of skilled players, for whom the TaylorMade’s TP line of equipment is intended. The stock TP shaft is the Mitsubishi Diamana 83 with .335″ tip diameter, which is used by many top tour pros. The r5 dual TP is also available with two custom shaft alternatives, Fujikura Speeder 757 and Fujikura SIX, both of which are used on tour. The grip on the r5 dual TP is a Golf Pride Tour Velvet, the most popular on tour.
“Like many clubs in our TP line, the r5 dual TP was created at the request of tour professionals,” says Tom Olsavsky, director of product development for TaylorMade. “A number of pros expressed interest in the r5 dual Type N, and asked if we could make a similar driver in which TLC cartridges could be reconfigured. The result of that request is the r5 dual TP.”
The r5 dual TP will become available at retail starting in mid June at a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $750.
