Wow. Never thought I’d say this, but Tiger Woods is playing the Frys.com event in October. The event is played October 6-9 (the 9th being my birthday) in CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin, CA.
Frys.com Open president Duke Butler estimates with Tiger’s appearance that the attendance would rise from 25,000 to 70,000.
Media scramble and some funny comments
With this announcement I’m sure some of the regular golf media scribes are scrambling to add this event to their travel schedule and some joked about not even knowing what city the event is in or when it is.
I really hope Tiger does well in this tournament. Golf succeeds as a business and competitive atmosphere when Tiger is in contention and it is such a shame that his golf game has suffered almost moreso than his personal life. This course is only about 45 minutes from Stanford, where he played his college golf, so hopefully his familiarity with the area will bring some hometown fans out to support him. This is also a good warm up for the President’s Cup which until a few weeks ago looked like it would also be Tiger-less. Hopefully he has swallowed some of his pride and is taking captain Fred Couples seriously when Couples told him he needed to play in some more tournaments. The competition might not be as stiff as other tournaments during the year, but it would be good for Tiger to either win or place high in the Frys Open to boost his fading confidence and get his golf game back on track.
