When I started this golf blog in 2004 there were a couple of things I never expected would happen as a result. The 1st would be possessing enough BBQ sauce to last the rest of my life and beyond. The 2nd would be interviewing an academy award winning actor. Who could have imagined?
Robert Duvall talks about the film Seven Days In Utopia
Years ago I read the novel Golf’s Sacred Journey. I enjoyed the story. This Friday, September 2nd 2011, the movie based on that novel, Seven Days In Utopia hits theaters. My review of the film will be posted the day the movie opens.
I had the great pleasure of interviewing Robert Duvall about his major role in the movie as the character “Johnny Crawford.” What a cool cat Mr. Duvall is. It would have taken me 12 years to type out the interview, so instead I put the audio up with some still images on a YouTube video. Enjoy.
Fun listening to Robert Duval. Seems like a genuine down to earth guy who’d be fun to have a beer with.
Looking forward to the movie. Enjoyed the novel very much.
Nice job!!
I am so looking forward to this movie! From what I’ve read and seen thus far, it’s surely going to be something everyone should see! I’m thinking about young golfers, as well as the more mature ones; also, I’m thinking it will be great for anyone to see! So glad it’s got a G rating! Let’s get out and support this to show the film industry that G is GOOD! Thanks!
This was a great interview. What I love about this is Robert Duval doesn’t even play game, but he worked hard to get into shape for the film (golf swing wise). I always love it when they make golf movies and I hope this one does well in the box office.
I particularly enjoyed what Duval said about Nicklaus and how Jack wasn’t the biggest fan of swing coaches, and that he relied on his athleticism and work ethic to win. This is mostly true about Nicklaus. He was the ultimate competitor. He had tremendous talent and a great mind for the game. I’ve always thought that Jack’s greatest talent was his ability to never give up and never get frustrated (for too long). He was always able to keep his mind focused on the goal and when he did lose, he did it with grace, and was determined to come back winning the next time. No wonder Nicklaus has the most major wins and probably the most runner-up finishes in majors as well. He just never gave up.
Boring interview. I wanted to hear more about the movie, Duvall’s prep for it and experience during filming than the social pandering of Tony towards a celebrity. Aimless questioning throughout; thanks for wasting 10 minutes of my time.
Nice going Tony!
Sounds like you are trying to talk him into playing the game! He sounds like a really straight forward guy and has wonderful insight into creating a good character. He has a good way of presenting everything in a positive light, but recognizes the need for some drama. Super personable and sounds like he was a joy to interview.
You are a natural Tony, great to hear you talking with some big personalities – I love the football talk at the end.
Great work!
Thanks for the comments, even J.B. We’re all entitled to our opinions…
Tony: Great job with your interview of Robert Duvall… I always love your blog! Best, Phil
I came across this site through a link someone posted on facebook. I’m a Robert Duvall fan but was not aware of this new movie. Will be looking forward to seeing it. I enjoyed the interview and did not detect any pandering — simply the courtesy anyone should extend to someone who is nice enough to submit to telephonic interview. Thanks for posting.
Cool… I should have called him too after getting that same email invitation. Or at least someone in the movie… Now that the movie’s coming out this weekend, I figure no reason to bother. Great job Tony. Seems like a great guy to talk to. Next time you talk to him tell him I’m sorry I didn’t call. I know he’s losing sleep over why I didn’t.
I’ve been trying to get some questions to one of my fav players who was in the movie, K.J. Choi KW. That’s been tougher.
