Here’s a quote from Ian Poulter in the upcoming issue of Golf World:
“…I haven’t played to my full potential yet. And when that happens it will just be me and Tiger.”
Hmm… OK. I know golfers need to talk and feel confident. I know the press and the public would love to see someone challenge Tiger. But the only way Ian Poulter can compete with Tiger Woods is in an apparel contest.
And what about Poulter’s fellow golf pros? Is he not calling them all out as well, saying none of them can challenge Tiger?
I think it sounds like he might be saying that when he reaches his full potential, then it will just be he and Tiger playing at their full potential – suggesting that maybe the other golfers aren’t playing their best. And I think that might be a fair statement to make.
Of course, I’ve been watching tennis and those players make statements like that all the time, so I don’t think Ian’s comments are that big of a deal.
And finally, we need people in the media to voice opinions like this because it will inspire other golfers to challenge Tiger in tournaments. They can look at Ian and say “If he thinks he can beat Tiger, then I can too.” Inspiration needs to come from somewhere because it sure isn’t coming from the announcers, commentators and writers – they will suck up to Tiger until his grandkids are 90.
Some might say Poulter was saying that just to get a little attention. The Blazer captured the video of the SportsCenter story – youtube.com/thegreenblazer – SportsCenter’s anchor rips Poulter pretty good.
